Saunders argumentiert: All die merkwürdigen und unlogischen Elemente in Gogols „Nase“ bündeln sich zu einer Kohärenz auf höherer (oder tieferer) Ebene, darum beurteilen wir die Geschichte nicht als misslungen. Saunders nennt Gogol einen „supreme realist“. (p. 297)
