„(Sulaco Valley) unrolled itself, with green young crops, plains, woodland, and gleams of water, park-like, from the blue vapour of the distant sierra to an immense quivering horizon of grass and sky, where big white clouds seemed to slowly fall into the darkness of their own shadows.“ (p. 88) – Emilia Gould ist mit ihrem Mann unterwegs und entdeckt Costaguana, an der Oberfläche ein Idyll, fast scheint es, als ob ihr nobler Charakter auf die Umgebung abfärbt. Passende Illustration auf der folgenden Seite. – Traumhafte Sequenz, mit Sätzen wie dem hier weichgezeichnet: „The ladies of the house would talk softly in the moonlight under the orange trees in the courtyards (…)“ (p. 89), die fast vergessen machen, wie Costaguana unter Gewalt und Misswirtschaft leidet.
